The Maryland ASLA Chapter held its inaugural Annual Meeting on June 24 at the Legg Mason Tower in Baltimore.

In her outgoing President's Letter to the chapter, Barbara Hopkins noted some challenges for the chapter, but expressed excitement about the solid foundation on which to build from as president-elect Larissa Torres takes over the leadership role.

At the annual state awards gala, Stanley Skalka, cofounder of Victor Stanley, David Locke, J.L. Fisher received an Award of Excellence. The Presidential Award of Excellence went to Hord Coplan Macht for Loyola University of Maryland's Gateway, Streetscape & Donnelly project in Baltimore. The Traveling Award for Innovative Excellence went to Mahan Rykiel Associates for their Green Tracks Study, also in Baltimore.

The chapter hosted its first Annual Meeting in the hope of growing the event and provided education and licensure credits for the landscape architects of Maryland and adjoining states. Six speaking sessions provided continuing education and LACES credits for local landscape architects. Speakers included Barbara Deutsch of the Landscape Architecture Foundation, designers at Biohabitats for an "inside the studio" session, and Andrew Hojnacki of Landscape Forms who presented on lighting technology.

Stanley Skalka, cofounder of Victor Stanley, along with David Locke, J.L. Fisher received an Award of Excellence at the 2017 MDASLA Awards.

The chapter held a golf tournament in September sponsored by Ernest Maier and also hosted a showing of Hometown Habitat, a production that sounds the alarm about habitat and species loss. The movie was accompanied by a panel of experts' discussion. The chapter's latest installment in the Victor Stanley Lecture Series took place on November 15th and featured Wes Michaels of Spackman Mossop Michaels. The chapter will also publish its annual magazine, Embark in December.
