Design Without Borders

The Revitalization of Hotel La Palma, El Salvador
by Designodal, Inc.

Designodal, Inc. of California provided pro bono master planning services that transform this six-acre historic site into a living gallery. The simple design strategy focuses on storytelling through the landscape, integrating the bold colors and expressive textures of Naif Art and historic references directly into the garden's physical form. A dedicated workshop space was designed to provide a permanent home for local artisans to teach, sell, and thrive. The design team's mission was to reinforce the idea that designers can impact significant changes even with limited resources. Photo Credit: Designodal, Inc.

In 2021, amidst the global pandemic, California-based Designodal, Inc. embarked on a mission to leverage design as a tool for economic and social recovery. The project was born from a strategic collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union in El Salvador and Hotel La Palma. Designodal was selected to provide comprehensive master plan, landscape revitalization guidelines, facility design concepts and strategic activation plans - all delivered within a five-week timeframe to assist the hotel in securing vital grant applications. Recognizing that the pandemic had deeply impacted the region's tourism-dependent economy, Designodal developed master plan guidelines that can be implemented in phases. The team provided all services pro bono while travel and accommodations were provided through the E.U. grant.

Historic Context

Founded in 1942, Hotel La Palma in La Palma, El Salvador, is where the peace agreement known as the "First Dialogue for Peace" took place on October 15, 1984, between the Salvadoran Government and FMLN Guerrilla. These conversations eventually led to the end of the Salvadoran Civil War. The hotel became important symbolic representation of freedom and is closely tied in public memory to that historic moment. The community is also the birthplace of Naif Art, an aesthetic movement founded by artist Fernando Llort that blends Mayan culture with modern styles.

Scope and Design Strategy
The master plan transforms the historic hotel into a vibrant eco-tourism beacon through a soulful, phased revitalization. By weaving the bold spirit of Naif Art into immersive gardens and sensory trails, the project celebrates local heritage while fostering a resilient circular economy. Key details include the Peace Garden & Sensory Trails that provide dedicated spaces for contemplation reflecting the town's history by using native plants and hardscape interspersed with sculptural elements. With a focus on a circular economy, spaces for art education were prioritized to ensure the hotel remains a hub where local artisans can create and sell their crafts. The design also emphasizes ecological integrity, utilizing locally sourced, porous hardscape alongside a native plant palette curated to support local birds and pollinators. Crucially, sustainable stormwater management and onsite retention were integrated into the landscape's framework.

Overcoming Challenges
The primary challenge was the minimal budget and remote location. To ensure feasibility, the team designed a phased implementation with an extensive material palette specifically tailored to the skill sets of local artisans. Utilizing local nurseries and labor allowed the team to bypass the hurdles of importing materials. Drainage and stormwater issues were redesigned as artistic seasonal waterfalls. The hotel grounds were assigned as a nursery to maintain the hotel landscape and generate additional income through plant sales.

The Outcome: A Living Legacy
The transformation of Hotel La Palma shows how collaborative design can strengthen remote, resource-constrained communities by building local pride, encouraging stewardship, and supporting economic growth. For Designodal, the greatest reward is seeing the community reclaim its story, showing how thoughtful design and strategic funding can reveal a region's distinctive creative identity. The credit for this success story also goes to the team at Hotel La Palma, who spearheaded the collaboration between various stakeholders and the community.
