Dr. Sowmya (Shoumo) Mitra is an Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture/ Plant and Soil Sciences at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). His primary responsibilities include teaching and research with turfgrasses. His research areas of interest are turfgrass physiology mainly environmental stress management, soil and water quality, soil fertility and fertilizers, fate of pesticides, chemical and biological control of weeds. Prior to joining Cal Poly Pomona he was a Product Manager and subsequently was involved in Product Management and Development for Eco Soil Systems, Inc. in San Diego, CA. Dr. Mitra received his M.S. in Weed Science/Agronomy and Doctorate in Environmental Soil Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He received his B.S. (Hons.) degree in Agricultural Engineering with a minor in Soil Science from B.C.K.V., India and received the Gold Medal for securing the First Class First position in his graduating class, which is the highest honor offered by the university. In 2002 he received an award for demonstrating excellence in design and innovation in Agricultural Engineering by the European Society of Agricultural Engineers. He received an ?EUR??,,????'??Outstanding Young Scientist Recognition Award?EUR??,,????'?? from the American Chemical Society (ACS)-Agrochemicals Division in 1999. The award was presented by the Division of Agrochemicals in recognition of his research with herbicide resistance. He received an award for ?EUR??,,????'??Excellence in Research?EUR??,,????'?? from Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of Ag. at Cal Poly Pomona in 2004. Dr. Mitra had published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented over 85 research papers at various national and international conferences.
