VDLA

Solana Beach, Calif.

Miramar National Cemetery
San Diego
VDLA led a multi-disciplinary team to provide master planning, design development and construction documentation for this annex to the existing Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, located on a 323-acre site on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Site constraints included air zone use restrictions, numerous existing easements crossing the site, extensive protected and endangered habitat, and challenging topography. Despite this, VDLA's design exceeded the original goal for burial spaces provided. Planting focused on low water design using recycled water, with retention of existing native plantings in and around the site.

Coronado Plaza

Coronado, Calif.
VDLA designed a public space along Orange Avenue that provides opportunities for outdoor dining, pedestrian gatherings, and tourist-oriented businesses. The improvements also served to reduce excessive crosswalk lengths along this busy avenue by capturing excessive right-of-way area and converting it to protected pedestrian space. A decorative stone and tile fountain, brick paving, clay planter pots and decorative iron railings enhance the plaza with the Mediterranean character existing in the adjacent commercial buildings.
La Colonia Skate Park
Solana Beach, Calif.
VDLA served as prime consultant for the master plan, construction/bid documents and construction administration. The scope fulfills a portion of the overall adopted master plan created by VDLA, which included extensive community outreach. The skate park was sited to preserve the majority of an existing turf play field, and the skate area design appeals to all ages and levels of experience. A self-powered Energi Plant that uses solar and wind generated power allows park patrons to charge up cell phones or laptops while at the park.
