In March, approximately 1,500 of the best landscaping students from across the nation visited Provo, Utah as part of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days.
Phil Allen, BYU professor of landscape management, was instrumental in bringing the event to the campus. He describes this contest as the “training pinnacle” for students.
“Hosting this event is a great honor for Utah and BYU,” Allen said of the annual event, which has been held for the past 30 years. “This is an Olympic-like landscape event where students come to compete for awards, internships and even full-time employment.”
“We’re hoping to help overcome some of the stereotypes people may have of the landscape-contracting profession,?EUR??,,????'?? Allen added. ?EUR??,,????'??We place 100 percent of our graduates, most of whom enjoy excellent salaries. They emerge from our program as highly skilled professionals.”
BYU?EUR??,,????'???s landscape management program, which offers a bachelor of science degree, was created in 2002 and received Associated Landscape Contractors of America accreditation this year. While most envision obtaining college degrees through written exams, that is not the case with this degree. Learning how to do the job in the field is a key part of the degree and a key part of the competition.
