The Residential Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
Ledden Palimeno Landscape Co. recently completed a lighting and audio install in the compact garden of a historic, 19th-century townhome.
The townhome offered a unique challenge, given the long and narrow dimensions of the outside space. The historical nature of the home, which was built in 1837, meant that the design and build of the garden had to be incredibly discrete while still combining beauty and function. A wide variety of lighting and loudspeaker fixtures placed behind plants and pots, with well light units incorporated seamlessly into the timber trellis, allowed Ledden Palimeno to blend form and function. The perfect audio system, designed to meet the homeowner's regular usage, presented another challenge, one that was solved by subtle integration of mini speakers.
Ledden Palimeno worked closely with landscape lighting and audio manufacturer to incorporate outdoor technology that was exactly what the homeowner wanted - discreet, subtle, and, even when visible, complementary to the outdoor living area and nineteenth century brickwork.
The full renovation involved planting, unique water features, custom-made window boxes, urns, a fountain, and an archway. Now finalized, the backyard offers a one-of-a-kind urban oasis in a nearly 200-year-old townhome in the heart of Philadelphia.
