UC Berkeley Excellence in Landscape Design Awards
Inaugural Year Sees Three Winners

Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley is one of ten campuses of the University of California system. The mission statement for the Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning department, which was founded in 1913, reads: "Our mission is to engage in research and teaching that will inspire and inform our profession through innovative design and planning."

This year was the inaugural year of University of California Berkeley's Award for Excellence in Landscape Design, put on by the Department of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning.

Funded by the Narayanan Family Foundation, the recognition is awarded to an individual or team of undergraduate and/or graduate student(s) that undertake a research project in which they explore "innovation in landscape design that relates to environmental issues such as sea level rise, green infrastructure, climate change, wetland restoration, and/or environmental justice."

To be eligible, students must be in good academic standing in their final year as an undergraduate of a Bachelors of Arts in Landscape Architecture, a graduate student in the Master of Landscape Architecture program, and/or a Ph.D student in the Landscape Architect program.

A committee of faculty members, external reviewers and representatives from the Narayanan Family Foundation review all the applications.

This year's winners are:
Dana Davidson for her project "Energy Efficiency in Hybrid Landscape Design,"
Alison Ecker for her project "E-Commerce Country: Cataloging Conditions and Speculating Futures at Sites of the On-Demand Urban Economy,"
and Kate Lenahan with "Groundwater Level Rise and Novel Contamination Pathways."
