In the end of November, the University of Maryland, in College Park, Md., released its highly comprehensive sustainability report that covers nine different topics relating to the sustainability of the campus.

Notably, when compared to 2005, the university achieved a decrease of 49% of all its carbon emissions, which is highlighted by a reduction of 70,000 metric tons between the years of 2016 and 2017. This is due in part to the installation of the campus's first indoor biowall back in April.

In an article found on the UMD website, Scott Lupin, director of the Office of Sustainability stated, "The university continues to make progress in its sustainability efforts and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impacts. We continue to do this through extensive collaboration, broad outreach efforts and by building consensus-based strategies."

Overall, there were only two areas of sustainability that the campus declined in. "Campus-wide Water Consumption" and "Solid Waste Admitted to Landfills" were both trending in the wrong direction, with approximately 33,000 gallons of water being consumed in 2017-2018 over 2014-2015. Solid waste admitted to landfills was way up, as 7,131 tons of trash was thrown away, up 3,361 tons over 2014-2015 and 1,864 tons over the 2016-2017 school year.
