For the redevelopment of its city hall, The City of Culver City hosted a design contest, selecting CHCG Architects of Pasadena and EDAW of Irvine as architect and landscape architect, respectively. The civic landscape EDAW designed at the City of Culver City's redeveloped city hall features two distinct community open spaces.
As the main pedestrian entry to the gallery and main public atrium, Culver City Plaza is a concourse with public spaces in a park-like setting. Enframed by arcades, canopy trees, palms, and three-story architecture, EDAW's design creates an open space appropriate for such community forums as inauguration ceremonies, public announcements, educational displays, art show, musical performances, job fairs, and civic rallies.
Heritage Park is a more intimate space.
The refurbished City Hall facade became the entry to the park with the City Hall Council Chambers rotunda as terminus. Along an angled walkway, site furnishings and cypress trees are spaced to reinforce the view to the Council Chamber. Several distinct garden spaces were implemented over a subterranean parking roofdeck. Drought-tolerant plant materials dramatically express the relation of the space to native California and Spanish garden style influences.
