Tie for First Place

Sierra magazine, the national publication for the environmental group called the Sierra Club, has released its complete ranking of the 269 universities and colleges across the nation that have implemented and utilized the best environmental practices.

This year marks the 12th consecutive year the list was comprised, and it now includes schools in Canada as well as community colleges. Everything from what classes are offered, to how the school obtains and manages its energy and water, were looked at and judged. In total, there are 269 schools on the list.

The top 20 environmentally friendly colleges according to Sierra magazine are:

19) Loyola Marymount University
18) University of Dayton
17) Lewis & Clark College
16) University of Oregon
15) Oregon State University
14) Chatham University
13) Santa Clara University
12) American University
11) Sterling College
10) Middlebury College
9) California State University, Chico
8) Seattle University
7) University of Massachusetts, Amherst
6) Dickinson College
5) Arizona State University
4) Colorado State University
3) University of Connecticut
2) University of New Hampshire
1) University of California, Irvine
1) Green Mountain College

There was a tie for first place this year between UC Irvine in southern California and Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt. Each of the top 20 schools has a brief description on why they were awarded their respected positions.
