Thieves Steal $2,000 in Trees

Mary Clapper, of Toledo, OH, said some strange sounds woke her up on a Monday morning in late May. “I told my son, ‘You better check your car because somebody took something from the yard,?EUR??,,????'???” Clapper said. But when she peered out the window, the noise wasn?EUR??,,????'???t coming from her yard, but her neighbor?EUR??,,????'???s.

Clapper saw that vandals had uprooted the neighbors?EUR??,,????'??? newly planted trees straight from the ground, tied them to the back of their truck, and were dragging them away. “Once they pulled up in the driveway, we saw someone get out of the truck, wrap a chain around the whole tree and just pull,” Clapper said. When her son, who also heard the noise, yelled out his window, the suspects took off. ”

?EUR??,,????'??We laughed. We didn’t know what to think when you see a tree being drug by a chain down Laskey Rd,” Clapper said.

Detectives say the criminals targeted a home in the 4900 block of Monac in west Toledo. But they didn’t bother with anything inside the home—just their trees, which cost about $2,000.

Police say that dirt trail down the road led to another house on a neighboring street. But when officers questioned the people who lived there, they said they knew nothing about it.
