Charlotte, North Carolina
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The School & Corporate Campus Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

The Commons at the Park is the reimagined and repurposed space of the former IBM and Flextronics manufacturing facility within University Research Park in Charlotte, NC. The project offers over 430,000 square feet of office space and is focused on a single big move: removing a 120-foot section through the middle of the building to create a 1.5-acre central park.

Designed by DPR, this new space seamlessly integrates with the architecture to create a true indoor/outdoor work environment to support today's more flexible work culture. A curvilinear path flows through the park, linking the key exterior spaces while providing direct connections to the interior office spaces. The design of the park provides opportunity for organic interaction, collaborative workspaces, passive and active recreation, and curated events. One can see salvaged objects from the former manufacturing facility reimagined in the landscape to create shade, seating, wayfinding, and public art. The project is targeting LEED silver certification.
