Sunrise Boundless Playscape
What happens when you combine a half-acre of sun-baked Kansas parkland with a community?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s desire to provide an engaging space for area children? You get the Sunrise Boundless Playscape in Wichita, Kansas.
The playscape was the dream of members of an area Rotary Club that chose to champion a Boundless Playground to commemorate the club?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s centennial year. The vision was ultimately transformed into reality by GLMV Architecture of Wichita, along with a dedicated group of community partners.
???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR
A boundless playscape is entirely barrier free. It is equally accessible to all children, regardless of age, or physical, cognitive, developmental or sensory disabilities. The idea behind a boundless playspace is to encourage children?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeand adults?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeof varying abilities to interact together in a safe environment that encourages shared activity and imaginative play.
At the time the Sunrise Boundless Playscape was designed, few other play areas in Kansas went beyond the minimal requirements of accessibility required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA guidelines for play areas require 50 percent of equipment to be accessible. In contrast, 70 percent of the Sunrise playscape is fully accessible to disabled children or adults.
When Wichita?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s West Sedgwick County-Sunrise Rotary Club decided to raise the funding for what would become a $1.5 million Boundless Playground in 2006, it was a new concept and would be the first of its kind in Kansas. After generating a preliminary site analysis and schematic layout plan alongside the Connecticut-based Boundless Playgrounds, Inc., McCluggage Van Sickle & Perry, the architectural firm that would evolve into today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s GLMV Architecture, quickly took on the project on a no-fee basis. Landscape architect Stephen Perry created a master plan, and Dondlinger Construction, another local Wichita firm, was the general contractor.
The Galaxy line (Kompan) includes the Canopus space station, with three spinners and a suspended PlayShell for climbing. The Spinners let the kids decide the tempo of spinning by using their arms and legs to cling to the center for fast ride or lean back to slow it down.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We took much more personal ownership in the project than any of us ever thought we might,?EUR??,,????'?????<? recalls GLMV?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Joseph Steffes, who took over Perry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s role with the playground following Perry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s retirement. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Steve created a beautiful master plan, and the project quickly attracted widespread community support.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Key among the project?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s early sponsors were the Children?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Miracle Network and the Via Christi Foundation of Wichita.
The Sunrise Rotary Club?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s dream continued to grow and evolve. What began as a $600,000 budget expanded to $1.5 million, with dozens of community groups, clubs and corporations participating.
Finding a Home The playground had to find a home in a park with plenty of open space, parking and inexpensive well water for irrigation. Wichita?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Sedgwick County Park fit the bill. Not only did the park have the required amenities, but it was in close proximity to the area?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s number one attraction, the Sedgwick County Zoo. As an added bonus, the park was heavily used by bicyclers, walkers, joggers and roller blade enthusiasts?EUR??,,????'?????<??oemany of whom had young children.
Challenges The park did pose some site design challenges. Located in an area where sand was once mined, the soil was extremely poor.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s nasty ground for plants,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Steffes explains. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We incorporated several earthen berms into the site?EUR??,,????'?????<??oenot only to define the space, but so we could bring in decent soil that would better promote sustained plant growth.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Shade?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeor the lack of it?EUR??,,????'?????<??oewas another important consideration. The park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s available open space was largely devoid of trees with the exception of a stand of redbud trees on the south end of the site. Kansas summers are hot and dry.
The lack of existing trees and inhospitable soil meant a variety of shade structures would be required to make the playground attractive as a summertime destination.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We knew right away that the few existing large canopy shade trees would need to be incorporated into the toddler area,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Steffes.
GLMV?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s master plan overcame the lack of shade by incorporating two gazebos and a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?cool topper?EUR??,,????'?????<? umbrella area where playground visitors can take a break under a cooling mist. As with most other areas of the playscape, the areas offer easy accessibility to those with limited physical ability.
The gazebos, in addition to offering respite from the sun, have become meeting points for organizers of all types of activities. During a recent daylong cleanup of the playground, Steffes was able to witness the area?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s traffic pattern first hand.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?If you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re there at 9 a.m. on a weekday, there will be a line of moms with jogging strollers and hand weights meeting at that gazebo,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Steffes reports. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?At 5 p.m. there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a whole different group.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Sunrise Boundless Playscape is also used after sundown. Silhouette lighting was installed in the playground as a security measure, explains Mr. Steffes. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t think so many people would come to play after dark?EUR??,,????'?????<??oebut really?EUR??,,????'?????<??oewhy wouldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t a kid think that playing in that kind of half-light is pretty cool??EUR??,,????'?????<?
One of the most complex design issues GLMV addressed was tied to the very essence of the playground: accessibility. The challenge was how to design a playscape that doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t stigmatize or segregate children based on their physical limitations.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We were committed to making sure that no child would be left alone on the sidelines in a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?wheelchair area,?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR??EUR??,,????'?????<? says Mr. Steffes.
The solution to fully integrating children of all ability levels was accomplished with ramps and grade changes that are cleverly disguised. The ramps are so seamlessly incorporated into the overall design and flow of the play space that their utilitarian purpose is not immediately evident. The ramp design provides aesthetically appealing site line breaks. The ramp elevations also provide a windbreak, which is crucial in windy Kansas.
Making the playground so highly accessible was also achieved through selection of the playground elements, which focused on nontraditional and more interactive play, as opposed to traditional ?EUR??,,????'?????<?post and platform?EUR??,,????'?????<? structures commonly seen everywhere. The play structures selected are designed with clearances that allow a child in a wheelchair to play alongside their siblings and friends who are not disabled.
The playground equipment was much different than anything else the designers had been seeing at the time, notes Steffes. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Instead of fixed monkey bars, these had moving pulleys that encouraged you to shift your weight and use your core muscles. We didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t just have a traditional merry-go-round. We had a giant donut that you clung to like a koala bear.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Learning how to design using unfamiliar equipment required some on-the-job training. Steffes remembers showing up in a suit and tie to check on the installation of a piece of equipment. Seconds after climbing aboard, he found himself sprawled flat on his back on the ground.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We realized we needed to be very sure we knew exactly what each piece of equipment was designed to do and how to tie everything together in a more holistic manner.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Toddler Play In addition to the main playground area, the 27,000 square foot Sunrise Boundless Playscape also features two toddler play areas: a swing area with traditional swings and those designed for disabled children, a sand play area and a sound garden complete with steel drums, a rain wheel and oversized marimba. The site also features a puppet house, an amphitheater and associated berm seating.
The entire playscape is built on a colorful rubberized surface, which at the time was a new material. Bright, light colors were integrated into a palette to delineate different play areas and make the playground a treat for the eyes, and help deflect as much of the Kansas heat as possible.
The Sound Garden and Shade Trees The sound garden and its larger-than-life musical instruments were located along a path designed to wind through a stand of redbud trees native to the site, providing precious shade.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t want to cut down a single tree unless we absolutely couldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t build around it,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Steffes says. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Even though we had to eradicate a lot of poison ivy, every tree was critical.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Locating The musical instruments were positioned distant from the main play area to keep the sounds from ?EUR??,,????'?????<?driving parents nuts.?EUR??,,????'?????<? The path also allows children to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main playground area if they need a quieter space.
Sand Play Steffes says this project has helped him learn a lot about how children play with sand. Sand has ?EUR??,,????'?????<?migrated?EUR??,,????'?????<? from the designated sand area into other areas of the playscape, resulting in some maintenance issues and aesthetic concerns.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Kids just playing in the sand is not a problem,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he says, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?but as soon as you introduce digging tools, shovels or buckets?EUR??,,????'?????<??oesand is going to find its way everywhere. There are always things you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?d do a little differently if you could do it over.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Financial Realities, Limited Funding Decreasing county funding has affected the completed playground. County staff removed planting beds and mulched areas because of decrease staff maintenance hours.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?I don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t blame them a bit, given the circumstances,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Steffes.
A sensory garden area designed with live plants has been similarly altered because of lack of county resources.
The families who flock to the Sunrise Boundless Playscape appear to be more than pleased with GLMV?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s design just as it is. The playground, which opened in 2009, was five years in the making. Children of all ages and abilities can be found from sunup to sundown.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s unbelievable just how much use the playground gets,?EUR??,,????'?????<? observes Steffes.
By turning a barren sunburned field into a bustling, whimsical destination where children of all abilities can share fun and recreation, GLMV Architecture and its partners brought the Sunrise Rotary Club?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s vision to life. Squealing. Laughing. Inclusive. Joyful life.
