The Sports Turf Managers Association announced the winner for its fifth annual "Mowing Patterns Contest."Head groundskeeper for the Great Lakes Loons, Kelly Rensel, was chosen for his mowing design at Dow Diamond stadium in Midland, Michigan. Rensel spent almost a year and a half planning the intricate design of the loon head logo for the 2017 Midwest League All-Star Game. "I've been a member for the STMA for probably 10 years and they're a great organization. I was really honored by it," Rensel said. Previous to the Great Lakes Loons, Rensel worked as head groundskeeper for the Greeneville (Tennessee) Astros and the Huntsville (Alabama) Stars. "Kelly continues to elevate awareness of the sports turf industry through his impeccable field art. Finding the perfect balance of safety and visual appeal can be challenging, yet he has managed to accomplish this impressive feat," said Kim Heck, CEO of STMA.Rensel's design will be featured at the 2018 STMA Conference & Exhibition in January and in an issue of SportsTurf Magazine.
