St. John's River Park at Friendship Fountain

Jacksonville, Florida
by Halff

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Among several great projects, we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought St. John's River Park deserved to be showcased online.

Located in Jacksonville's Southbank Riverwalk, Friendship Fountain has been an iconic landmark for over 60 years. Recently renovated, the fountain and surrounding St. Johns River Park have been transformed into a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike.

The updated park features a thoughtfully designed playground inspired by the 1562 arrival of Captain Jean Ribault along the St. Johns River. At its center stands the La Trinité play structure, representing the French's prized vessel. A secondary structure, designed to resemble a shipwreck on the riverbank, adds an element of adventure.

The playground also includes a swing set and a variety of play features from Landscape Structures, encouraging exploration and imaginative play for children of all ages. Artful concrete sculptures from ID Sculptures, featuring native animals like a turtle, frog, alligator and a climbable tree, enhance the park's connection to the local environment.

The centerpiece of the park, the historic Friendship Fountain, underwent a full renovation in 2024. Today, it features a walkable plaza with pergolas for shade, ample seating and sweeping views of the St. Johns River. In the evening, families can unwind together and enjoy the captivating illuminated water show, a perfect ending to a day of play and discovery.
