Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently received a $150,000 grant as part of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich?EUR??,,????'???s Recycling Expansion and Modernization (REM) program.
The university plans to use the money to test and demonstrate that worm castings can create a rich, organic fertilizer for use on turfgrass and vegetable crops. The project aims to show that this approach will reduce the amount of organic solid waste SIUC sends to municipal solid waste streams and landfills.
?EUR??,,????'??Other Illinois institutions will be able to view this unique waste management technique and implement the approach when needed,?EUR??,,????'?? said SIUC?EUR??,,????'???s recycling and solid waste coordinator, Andilee Warner.
