Seascape: Eleftherias Square

Kavala, Greece
by Land n Arch

Architectural firm Land n Arch (https://landnarch.com) has envisioned Eleftherias Square in Kavala, Greece, as a transformative public space aimed at fostering unity within the urban fabric. This ambitious project reinterprets the natural landscape, drawing inspiration from three fundamental elements characteristic of the Greek seascape: sand, rock, and planks. Each of these elements is given a unique architectural expression, skillfully woven together to bridge the discontinuities in the urban landscape and ultimately guide visitors toward the sea.

Connections: Urban Structure
A fundamental goal of this design is to create a cohesive surface that aligns with the existing urban structure, seamlessly channeling movement toward the city's seafront. The urban lines flow gently into the heart of the square, delineating subareas and defining entrances from the city.

The unifying terrain of Eleftherias Square fosters synergies between the urban environment and the square itself, incorporating the existing urban continuities of the streets into its surface. This design not only establishes a strong axis of movement toward the water but also cultivates a new urban identity for the central square of Kavala. It manifests as a linear mosaic of urban patterns and natural land formations, functioning as a cohesive whole that draws visitors toward the waterfront.

Unified Structure: Individual Areas
The urban layout serves as the foundation for the design, facilitating the emergence of individual activity cores within the unified structure of the square. Distinct spatial units are interconnected and organically integrated, creating a harmonious and cohesive space. This approach ensures that while each area maintains its unique identity, it contributes to the overall unity of Eleftherias Square, enhancing the experience for all who visit. In summary, Eleftherias Square stands as a testament to thoughtful urban design, where nature and architecture converge, offering a vibrant gathering place for the community and visitors alike.

The vegetation
The landscape features a carefully curated selection of existing plant species, complemented by flora native to Greece. The elevation variations along the northwestern boundary of the square have been thoughtfully addressed through the incorporation of terraces. These terraces gently descend towards the center of the square, creating distinct seating areas that are enriched with lush, vibrant vegetation. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also fosters a tranquil environment for all visitors to enjoy.
