Scioto Peninsula Public & Private Streetscapes

Columbus, Ohio
by MKSK

The Streetscapes Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Scioto Peninsula Public & Private Streetscapes is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

At the heart of Columbus' growing Scioto Peninsula, a bold new vision has begun to take shape. The Scioto Peninsula development introduced a dynamic, mixed-use neighborhood anchored by a vibrant, national award-winning cultural district.

MKSK partnered with Downtown Columbus Inc. to craft a conceptual urban design plan that would guide the transformation of six acres of underutilized land in the East Franklinton neighborhood-just steps from Dorrian Green Park, the COSI Science Museum, and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum. The resulting streetscape network links to the Scioto River Greenway through a new network of parks, paths, and green streets that encourage activity and interaction.

To reimagine how people live, work, and gather along the riverfront, MKSK worked with the City of Columbus and Downtown Columbus Inc. to develop a conceptual urban design plan that will guide the Developer teams for the first phase of the redevelopment. The plan laid the groundwork for a dynamic mixed-use district, featuring including residential (11 story), office (eight story), hotel (eight story), retail, and a parking garage (1400-spaces). The first phase includes approximately 240,000 square feet of office space, 550 residential units, 180 hotel rooms, and street-level retail.

In collaboration with EMH&T, Downtown Columbus Inc., and three private developers, MKSK created an overall streetscape design that not only reflected the area's unique character and urban scale, but illustrated the street typology and hierarchy, spatial scale, and context within the overall Scioto Peninsula development framework. MKSK developed detailed plans in coordination with roadway design and lane configuration by the Project Engineer including layout of sidewalks, mid-block and corner plazas, and crosswalks including the integration of the planned shared use path on the east side of Belle Street with the existing Dorrian Green/COSI entrance plaza. The team was deeply involved in designing the public and private streetscapes that would knit the new development seamlessly into the fabric of the city.

The private street, named "High Water Alley", includes District Gateway and branding elements recognizing the 1913 flood which inundated the low-lying Franklinton neighborhood, which flanks the west bank of the Scioto River across from downtown Columbus.
