Reduced 2015 ACA Target in Sight

The Obama administration had earlier reduced the expected number of ACA enrollees in 2015 from 13 million sign-ups to 9.1 million, a move that was criticized as being politically motivated.

The Department of Health and Human Services recently announced that 6.4 million people purchased ObamaCare from the federal government in the first month of open enrollment for 2015, which reportedly is on track to easily reach the mark set by administration officials of 9.1 million signups this year.

Counting those who have already bought a policy, nearly 8 million applications have been submitted and more than 14 million people have logged on to the federal healthcare Web site.

Of the 6.4 million policyholders, about 1.9 million are first time buyers, and the vast majority of returnees allowed themselves to be auto-enrolled in spite of the federal government's efforts to get them to re-enroll themselves in order to prevent likely rate hikes.

"We emphasized very strongly and tried to communicate with people about coming in," said HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

The number of sign-ups does not include those who have enrolled in the state-run exchanges – a reported total of more than 1 million.

In spite of the probability of reaching expectations, the original enrollee mark set by officials was 13 million sign-ups and they received criticism for lowering that number.

The figures also showed a massive surge in signups in the week ahead of the Dec. 12 deadline to buy coverage that will go into effect before Jan. 1.
