Pittsburgh is considering demolishing Mellon Arena, the National Hockey League's oldest venue, as part of developing the 28-acre Lower Hill District.

A new arena under construction across from the Igloo is scheduled for completion in mid-July 2010.

Aside from hosting hockey since 1967, the venue notably showcased the Beatles in 1964 and Elvis in 1973.

Historic preservationists want to reuse the building, perhaps as a park and retail center.
