Springfield MA—Three Peter Pan bus lines will pay $237,179 in penalties and install new filters on most of their buses to settle violations of federal clean air and clean water rules.
The New England Regional Office of the federal Environmental Protection Agency said the settlement involves Springfield-based Peter Pan Bus Lines and Peter Pan-owned and operated Arrow and Bonanza lines.
According to the EPA, the lines violated storm water permit requirements and federal oil spill prevention regulations. It also said Peter Pan violated a Massachusetts regulation that prohibits vehicle engine idling for more than five minutes.
It said the idling rule was violated at least 45 times from last February through April in Boston and Springfield.
The EPA said Peter Pan agreed to equip nearly all of its New England fleet of buses with new crankcase filters to minimize potential storm water pollution from oil leaks. It said the filter will reduce each bus’s leaks from one to six gallons of oil a year.
