For the past two years, the National Recreation and Park Association has been running their Parks for Monarchs campaign in an effort to help save the monarch butterfly. By sharing information through webinars, social media, magazines, education sessions at trade shows and more, NRPA has worked to create an interconnected network of parks dedicated to saving the monarch. NRPA put out resources on where to find free milkweed plants, and members have utilized these resources to install Monarch Waystations, habitats within parks for monarchs and other pollinators. The association has further plans to increase monarch habitats by surveying park agencies in order to determine the need for training and resources; offering additional opportunities for training and education through webinars; engaging the public in citizen science; and involving children in monarch conservation efforts. In November, NRPA partnered with the Monarch Joint Venture, a group of organizations working together to protect monarch migration across the lower 48 United States. The Venture intends to conserve and protect monarch populations and their migratory patterns through science-based habitat conservation and restoration measures. Other organizations that have partnered with the Monarch Joint Venture include the U.S. Forest Service, National Wildlife Federation, National Park Service and more. The partnership with NRPA recognizes and honors the contributions of parks and recreation facilities nationwide for monarch protection.
