Landscape architects play a critical role in addressing the causes and costs of traffic fatalities, as highlighted in TRIP's recent report.

A comprehensive report released by TRIP, a transportation research nonprofit, delves into the causes and costs of the alarming increase in U.S. traffic fatalities. As the nation grapples with persistently high fatality rates, landscape architects are recognized for their crucial contributions in designing transportation projects that enhance road user safety.

Titled "Addressing America's Traffic Safety Crisis: Examining the Causes of Increasing U.S. Traffic Fatalities and Identifying Solutions to Improve Road User Safety," the report meticulously analyzes the surge in traffic fatalities from 2019 to 2022 at both national and state levels. Despite a slight decrease in numbers in 2022, fatalities have remained significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, raising concerns among transportation experts.

The report identifies several key findings. While vehicle travel experienced a temporary decline during the pandemic, the number and rate of traffic fatalities rose steeply. Between 2019 and 2022, U.S. traffic fatalities increased by 19 percent, reaching 42,795 fatalities in 2022. Bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities accounted for 20 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2022, with an increase of 19 percent compared to 2019. Additionally, motorcyclist fatalities increased by 20 percent during the same period.

TRIP's report attributes this upward trend in traffic fatalities primarily to increased risks taken by motorists. Driving patterns and behaviors were significantly affected during the pandemic, with many drivers engaging in riskier behavior such as speeding, failure to wear seat belts, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

For landscape architects involved in transportation projects, this report underscores the importance of prioritizing road user safety. By designing safer roads, improving infrastructure, and promoting responsible driving behavior, landscape architects can contribute to reducing traffic fatalities. Adequate investment in roadway safety improvements is crucial, as the U.S. currently faces a significant backlog in necessary safety enhancements.

In response to the report's findings, Dave Kearby, Executive Director of TRIP, emphasized the need for robust investment and collaborative efforts from transportation and safety-related agencies. Kearby explained, "Making a commitment to eliminating fatal and serious injuries on the nation's roadways will require robust investment and coordinated activities by transportation and safety-related agencies."

As landscape architects continue to shape the built environment, their contributions in prioritizing road safety can play a pivotal role in reversing the troubling trend of increasing traffic fatalities across the United States.
