New National Park in Indiana
Plus Free Park Admission Days

Indiana now has its first and only national park, as President Trump re-designated the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as a national park. Subsequently, this is America's 61st national park.

The legislation signed by the president also renames the 1.6-mile Miller Woods trail in the new national park as the Paul H. Douglas Trail, in honor of the Illinois United States senator who helped establish the land as a national lakeshore in 1966.

As the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore had previously fallen under the stewardship of the National Parks Service, the change to a national park is not expected to result in any immediate changes to the grounds, other than the addition of new signage.

In other national park news, on five days in 2019, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to the public. One of these dates has already passed, but four opportunities for free park entrance remain:
