The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) recently released the third edition of the 'Urban Bikeway Design Guide.' The newest version features detailed guidance for every step of the design process, from policy and planning to building the project. More than just designing the physical bike lane, the guide also provides strategies for engaging the community and even designing an entire biking network. According to NACTO, the goal is to make connected, bikeable streets the standard. The guide works towards this by providing greater technical guidance than has been available in previous editions.

As a result of the first guide published in 2011, hundreds of local, state, and regional governing bodies across the U.S. and Canada have created safer streets for their citizens. This is the first update to the guide since the second edition was published ago in 2014.
