Bailey Nurseries of Newport, Minn., recently announced that the are set to release a new variety of Hydrangea called Strawberry Sundae???(R)???AE???? in the spring of 2014. The shrub, which is part of the grower's First Editions???(R)???AE???? brand, is a compact version of their Vanilla Strawberry???(R)???AE???? Hydrangea with which it shares many traits, including white blooms that change to pink then to a strawberry red when night temperatures drop a few degrees. The grower states that this hydrangea paniculata makes a good accent or large container plant, and growing to only about four feet, works well for small garden spaces. Its recommended exposure is full sun to part shade and its recommended planting zone is four to eight, which makes it suitable to grow in at least parts of all lower 48 states. With medium green foliage, the red coloration of the flower persists for at least three to four weeks. The habit is upright becoming cascading later in the season. As with all of the First Editions???(R)???AE???? new plant collection, the Hydrangea paniculata 'Rensun' PPAF will be exclusive to garden centers for two years.
