Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton signed two bills in July to keep the St. Johns River free from fertilizer and to conserve the city?EUR??,,????'???s water supply.
The first ordinance is designed to address fertilizer on turf grass that flows into the river. Commercial companies will have to successfully complete the Florida Green Industries Best Management Practices training and follow those guidelines. They must also maintain records showing how much nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizers they use and where they’re applied.
Homes will need to follow Florida Yards and Neighborhoods practices and provide a six foot zone of landscape planting or ground cover which does not require intensive fertilizer, watering and mowing, adjacent to water bodies. Applying fertilizer during a flood or severe weather watch and blowing grass clippings in the street are also prohibted.
Landscaping is also the focus of the irrigation ordinance; during daylight saving time, homeowners with addresses that end in odd numbers can water on Wednesday and Saturday. Even numbers get Thursday and Sunday. Non-residential addresses get their turn on Tuesday and Friday. There will be no watering between 10 am and 4 pm.
