Illumina Corporate Campus
San Diego
An environment designed to stimulate interaction among the scientists, management and support staff was envisioned for this three-phase addition to an existing 16-acre corporate campus. Research Building 4 was nearly complete when the need for a sports facility was identified and designed. Then a caf??(C)/amphitheater/fitness center was conceived as a social gathering space, presenting major accessibility challenges. These challenges were met by NLA incorporating universal access, bio-basins and bio-swales, an existing water feature and a fire lane into the overall landscape composition. The result appears as a seamless continuation of the original campus.

Elephant Odyssey
San Diego
As the prime consultant, NLA conducted workshops with curators and keepers, operations managers, horticulture and education staff in order to design the site of a nine-acre complex of animal exhibits with animal holding areas. This included transplanting of trees, artificial rocks, bus viewing, pathways, glass viewing and water features to create safe and attractive home environments for Asian and African Elephants as well as the following: California condor, rattlesnake, camel, ass, pronghorn, Pacific pond turtle, secretary bird, tapir, capybara, guanaco, jaguar, African lion and three-toed sloth. NLA oversaw selection of sub-consultants, workshop facilitation, schematic design, design development, construction documents and bid administration. NLA adhered to the schedule and budget for this project.
Jonas Salk Elementary School Campus
San Diego
NLA provided the landscape architecture for a new elementary school and joint use field nestled in an existing suburban neighborhood, next to a neighborhood park. The science-based emphasis of the design was inspired by the school's namesake and features a series of outdoor classrooms arranged in the lunar phases around a mounded "sun" of a lawn, each with its own age-specific lesson. Environmental hurdles and a challenging soil type were solved through off-site mitigation and careful amending of the existing cobble-filled soil. Opened in the spring of 2015, this school is the fulfillment of a community effort begun in 1975.
