ANNAPOLIS, MD ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) A recently released survey about Maryland?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s turfgrass industry reveals that an estimated 1.1 million acres of turf were maintained in the state in 2005, representing approximately 18 percent of the total land area (6.2 million acres). The majority of the 1.1 million acres in turfgrass – 937,000 acres – was at single family residences with the balance on school and government property, religious facilities, golf courses, sod farms and recreational facilities among others about which data were collected. The survey also shows that revenue from the sale of Maryland turfgrass products and services was just over $400 million in 2005, with $375 million in sales generated by lawn care firms and $28 million in sales by sod farms.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?This report is the most comprehensive picture to date of the scope and economic importance of the state?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s turfgrass industry,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Mary Ellen Setting, Assistant Secretary for Plant Industries and Pest Management at the Maryland Department of Agriculture. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It shows that this segment of the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?green?EUR??,,????'?????<? industry is a significant contributor to the state?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s workforce, economy, and land use.
Sod farmers are the foundation of a large and growing industry that has great benefit to the environment as well.?EUR??,,????'?????<?

The Maryland Turfgrass survey collected detailed information on topics including total acreage in turfgrass, the number of workers employed in the industry, the amount of equipment owned by the industry and total expenses for the industry in 2005.
The survey was commissioned by the Maryland Turfgrass Council and the Maryland Turfgrass Association and conducted in 2006 by the Maryland Field Office of U.S. Department of Agriculture?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) with guidance from the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
