A report just released from the advocacy group, Small Business Majority, concluded:

25% do not reopen following a major disaster.

33% of owners have been personally affected by extreme weather.

57% of small businesses have no disaster recovery plan.

$33,000 the daily median cost of downtime from a small business affected by these events.

Indirect risks from extreme weather events and other natural disasters include:

  • Power outages
  • Lack of access to water
  • Increased demand for heat or air conditioning
  • Rising insurance costs
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Lack of access to natural resources
  • Loss of work hours

Preparing for these risks puts businesses in a better position to carry on after such an event.
