Dan Foley, CLP, current president of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), president-elect, John Gibson, CLT, and past-president Kurt Kluznik, CCLP, sat down at PLANET?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Green Industry Conference (GIC) in November to reflect on 2005 and look ahead to 2006.
This time last year, two organizations (PLCAA and ALCA) anxiously hoped that their merger would be a success. Now, a year later and sitting at PLANET?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s first ever GIC, Dan Foley reported on the success of the merger. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve had a lot of firsts this year,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Foley stated. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our membership is up 11 percent this year, and we surpassed our attendance goal for this GIC.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Foley also explained that the increased membership had made a great and positive impact on PLANET?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill.
Although John Gibson doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t step in until January, his leadership can already be seen in 2006 events. One of the first things he has implemented is moving PLANET?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Summer Leadership meeting to August to separate it from the July Legislative Day in Washington, D.C. This calendar adjustment reflects feedback received from members after a combined event this year.
Kurt Kluznik has been the PLANET liaison on the possible American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) merger and he spoke about the current status of the two organizations related to the merger. A letter of intent to pursue exploration of the merger has been signed by both organizations and they plan to spend 2006 doing the due diligence required to see if a merger best serves both PLANET and ANLA. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll look at dues structures and all other facets of both organizations to determine if this is the right move for both of us,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Kluznik explained. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?If we all agree that this will benefit both of our organizations, the earliest a merger would take place would be Jan., 2007,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Kluznik added. He went on to explain that the merger could bring a lot of expanded benefits to members of both organizations as well as provide a larger voice for lobbying on Capitol Hill.
Foley, Gibson, and Kluznik all agree that PLANET is at an exciting crossroads. With new members, greater networking opportunities and broader green industry representation, the organization is on track to serve as the respected leader and voice of America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s green industry.
ABC?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s 2006 agenda includes enhancing the association?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s efforts toward workforce development, which recognizes diversity as being critical to the industry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s success. ABC will continue its outreach efforts with secondary school students, in particular, to increase their awareness and understanding of the construction industry and to extend opportunities in craft training, apprenticeship, management and leadership training, and to encourage participation in student competitions.
ABC has made a strong national commitment to educating the workforce of the future through its involvement in accreditation programs for two- and four-year construction degree-granting institutions and its involvement with other associations in national programs working with high school and college students. These efforts support ABC?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s goal of keeping construction opportunities in front of students, as well as continually improving the construction field?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s management training opportunities.
ABC?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s national convention is among the industry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s most prominent events, increasing the industry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s visibility and the overall awareness of construction?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s importance to the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s economy.
Among ABC?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s top legislative priorities is congressional passage of small business health plan (SBHP) legislation. SBHPs would allow small companies the opportunity to pool their risk with similar small businesses, providing them with a better position when bargaining with the insurance companies so they could buy insurance with the same leverage larger competitors have.
In June 2005, President Bush addressed ABC?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s membership at the association?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s annual legislative conference in Washington, D.C., and voiced his support for SBHPs as well as tax relief and repeal of the death tax.
ABC, through its efforts both in Washington, D.C., and its chapters throughout the country, will spend 2006 continuing its work on a variety of fronts advancing the development of a safe workplace and high-performance workforce through quality education and training.
The Professional Grounds Management Society treated grounds professionals to many opportunities for career advancement through a variety of educational venues. In addition to dozens of educational and networking events offered at the regional level through the Society?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s local branch activities, the 2005 School of Grounds Management recently drew well over 200 grounds management personnel from all over the United States. Held Nov. 2 through 5 in conjunction with the Green Industry Expo in Orlando, the school provided access to over 60 educational sessions on topics ranging from improving communication with employees to the latest trends in turf care.
The Society also recently recognized the best in grounds management with the announcement of the 2005 Green Star Award winners. The Green Star Awards program complements other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. This program will salute the grounds superintendent responsible for maintaining a well-manicured landscape year round. Also this year, Ellen Newell, CGM, assistant director of grounds services at Arizona State University, was elected and installed as the new volunteer president of PGMS during the society’s annual business meeting on Nov. 4 held in conjunction with the Green Industry Exposition in Orlando, Fla.
The 84th grounds management professional to hold the office, Newell succeeds Chris Fay of University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as the chief elected officer of the 94-year-old green industry organization.
The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute had a productive 2005. Early in 2005 OPEI established the OPEI Research and Education Foundation. This foundation will encourage educational and research activities and provide information and guidance to the general public about the safe and proper use of outdoor power equipment and its related economic and environmental impact. OPEI also launched its new website, www.opei.org in June. A comprehensive industry resource, the website features OPEI safety programs, an industry library, links to our members, including a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Who Makes That Section;?EUR??,,????'?????<? information on EXPO, the international lawn, garden, & power equipment exposition; and a job classified section. EXPO 2005 was held in October in Louisville, Ky. This tradeshow is the largest of its kind in the US. This year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s tradeshow featured over 500 manufacturers and suppliers exhibiting together in the newly renovated Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. The show also included a 20-acre outdoor demonstration area for attendees to test drive many of the new products on display. The economic forecast for the industry is mixed. Overall, the 2005 Model Year (MY) will under perform MY 2004 by 0.7% for consumer outdoor power equipment products with the exception of hand-held products. According to industry estimates, overall shipments of hand-held products (hand-held blowers, backpack blowers, trimmers and chain saws) are forecast to post moderate growth during calendar year 2005.
Landscaping is a key part of rebuilding America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s storm-devastated communities.
Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma dealt a devastating blow to many American municipalities and communities. Our most recent hurricanes toppled countless trees and destroyed countless millions of dollars of landscaping and green space of communities along the Gulf Coast. Entire neighborhoods have been submerged by floodwaters for extended periods of time, which will undoubtedly continue to cause a tremendous negative impact on these communities?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? landscaping.
The landscaping in these communities was, in many cases, a deciding factor for citizens to purchase homes in particular neighborhoods. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Living in a subdivision with trees that were older than my great-grandparents was great,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Kerry Lauricella stated. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Now these neighborhoods are wiped out and we not only have to re-build the homes, but the trees and green space that helped make them a neighborhood.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
As a former councilman and the current director of the National Association of Cities, Kerry Lauricella realizes that all America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s municipalities face similar issues. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?One of our greatest challenges is to provide a high quality of life for our citizens, while keeping taxes down,?EUR??,,????'?????<? stated Lauricella.
Taxes generated from local businesses typically generate one of the large percents of cities, towns or villages total revenue. Operating a municipality is very similar to running a business or household, all of which must continue to increase their recurring revenues in order to keep up with increasing expenses.
When selling a home, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?curb appeal?EUR??,,????'?????<? is very important. Properly installed and maintained landscaping will create a better ?EUR??,,????'?????<?curb appeal?EUR??,,????'?????<? for a municipality trying to increase local tourism or to attract new customers for local businesses to attract home buyers.
The National Association of Cities is currently assisting over 10,000 cities, towns and villages. Information regarding these cities towns and villages can be located online at www.buildingamerica.org
