The old Kalama Park playground in Kihei, Maui is scheduled to be replaced by a new playground. In the meantime, a vandal or vandals have burned a section of the playground.
The thought of building a new playground and having someone also destroy property has county park officials seeking a better means to protect the park. The parks department pays for private security at the park from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., but only on varying nights. Clearly, that?EUR??,,????'???s not enough. Video surveillance is probably the only solution.
The Kihei Community Association on Maui has a Kalama Park Action Team of volunteers that help keep the park clean and safe. They patrol, paint over graffiti, replace benches and tables, trim the bushes and pick up litter.
A $365,000 contract has recently been awarded to David P. Ting and Sons to construct the new playground.
