Mandatory E-Verify Looming

House Republicans outlined an immigration enforcement measure recently that would make using E-Verify mandatory. U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, filed a bill that would require all employers to eventually use the Internet-based E-Verify system that checks a worker’s legal status. "I can't think of anything that is more common-sense and more needed," Smith said. "The people who will benefit from this bill are unemployed American workers."

Proposed Timeframe
More than 10,000 employees: Required within six months.
More than 500 employees: Required within one year
More than one employee: Required within two years

Key facts
No charge for employers to use the system.
E-Verify is mandatory for federal contractors and subcontractors.
