Soil Conditioner Promotes Better Water Holding Capacity by Staff
Changing the color of hydrangeas is not magic, it's science. Live Earth Soil Conditioner changes the color of the hydrangea bloom from pink to blue. The secret lies in the soil pH; its degree of acidity or alkalinity. When hydrangea's blooms have blue sepals the shrub grows in acidic soil. When its blooms develop red or pink sepals, the hydrangea is grown in neutral to basic soil. The hydrangea is unique among plants in this ability to indicate soil acidity. To maintain a blue hydrangea bloom, the soil pH should ideally be between 5.0 and 5.5. Soil pH for a pink hydrangea is 6.5 to 7.0. Adding Live Earth Products Soil Conditioner to the soil in which the hydrangea is planted not only transforms the blooms from pink to blue, but increases soil carbon, soil organic matter, can improve water and nutrient uptake in flowers, and helps them to grow larger, stronger root systems. According to plantgardener.com, hydrangeas like a soil that contains humic acid. "Soil with a high humic acid content is actually ideal for them. Humic acid helps keep moisture in the soil, which is very important in order to keep your hydrangeas healthy."[1]
