A state board revoked the license of a landscaping college, following a judge’s recommendation.
For nearly a year, the Fleur de Lis Institute in Tucson, Arizona has been under scrutiny by the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education following complaints from a handful of students.
The school offers landscape design classes.
An administrative law judge earlier this month recommended that the board revoke the license.
An attorney for the school, Jeremy Butler, said Fleur de Lis hasn’t received its due process and that staff members at the state agency were biased toward students who complained about the school.
Assistant attorney general Melissa Cornelius said the school has had many chances to improve.
“They have over time tried to blame everyone but themselves,” she told board members. “They can’t accept responsibility for the school’s obvious failure” to comply with board orders, audit financial records, maintain student records and honor student requests for refunds in a timely manner.
“There were so many violations of law that there’s nothing else to do but revoke” the license, Cornelius told the board.
Fleur de Lis may appeal the decision.
Students at Fleur de Lis may be able to recover payments to the school through the agency’s student tuition recovery fund, according to board members.
