Six Landscape Architecture Students Receive Scholarships

With the support of LAF's "50 & Forward Campaign" donors, starting in 2018, the Olmsted Scholar finalist awards increased from $1,000 to $5,000 for graduate students and to $3,000 for undergraduates. This year, Elizabeth Camuti (left) and Karina Ramos (right) were the grand prize winners.

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) recently chose this year's National Olmsted Scholars. A total of 50 graduate and 35 undergraduate students from across the country were nominated by their school's faculty for exceptional leadership potential.

Elizabeth Camuti, a master's student at the University of Virginia, was awarded the graduate student prize of $25,000 to aid in her research regarding new forms of socio-ecological infrastructure for the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She will be graduating with a Master of Landscape Architecture degree in May, 2018.

Karina Ramos, an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, was the second Olmsted scholar chosen and received a $15,000 award. She plans to use the grant to design a physical plan for a small town in Peru, which is located near her hometown, Los Olivos. Karina graduates in the spring of 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.

Six National Olmsted Scholar finalists were also chosen. The graduate finalists, who each received a $5,000 award, and their respected universities, are:
Rachel Ison, University of Southern California
Nicholas Jabs, University of Pennsylvania
Steven Nu????(R)????ez, University of Texas at Arlington

Three undergraduate finalists each received an award of $3,000:

Toni Candanedo, Arizona State University
Bryce Donner, University of Florida
Karen Lomas-Gutierrez, University of California, Davis
