The 30' tall green wall on the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Culinary/Allied Health Building was constructed with the LiveWall® system, which supports plants as nature intended"?uroots growing downward, stems and leaves growing up. Many green wall installations are retrofits, but the new building was construction with a green wall as an integral design element. The green wall has three components: plastic planter modules, module liners (for growing plants off-site) and rails with mounting tracks and irrigation conduits. The rails attach to the wall; the planter modules are secured into the rail slots; and the pre-planted liners inserted into the modules. The green wall is set between sets of windows on three sides, which make the areas that frame the green wall light and bright. Their green and blue glass colors symbolize earth and sky to express the project's design goal. Parts of the 13-acre site on which the Healthy Living Campus was constructed were flood-prone. The project included moving and adjusting Portage Creek to decrease flooding in the area. There is landscaping and a new trail along the creek, and pervious paving for the parking lot.
