In 1969, Professor Ian L. McHarg published his book Design With Nature, which presented an ecologically aware approach to the planning and design of communities. This summer, the University of Pennsylvania is celebrating McHarg's achievements with One Planet, Three Exhibits, a multi-platform display of human interventions in the landscape. The three featured exhibits are called Design With Nature Now, A Book of Days and The House We Live In.The Design With Nature Now exhibit offers a global tour of 25 projects in 21 nations to consider the effects of ecological design in an era defined by a focus on sustainability. The 25 projects fall into five themes: Big Wilds, Urban Futures, Rising Tides, Fresh Waters and Toxic Lands.A Book of Days draws from the extensive holdings of the Architectural Archives at Penn. The purpose of the exhibit is to revisit McHarg's early career and survey the Glasgow landscapes that influenced him through the eyes of Landscape Architect and speaker Laurel McSherry. The House We Live in analyzes McHarg as a person and a designer, also dipping into Penn's Architectural Archives. The exhibit is held in the Kroiz Gallery, across from the Fisher Fine Arts Library. The exhibition is now open and will run through September 15.
