Hurricane Ian Response

Florida DOT Inspects Bridges
by Staff

Hurricane Ian caused roadway damage and closures that have caused crews to work tirelessly to clear and mitigate issues with evacuation.

Florida recently faced a Category 4 storm in late September. Hurricane Ian created tornado-like damage and major flooding that led Governor Ron DeSantis to declare a major disaster for all 67 counties as well as for 100 percent reimbursement from the federal government for 60 days to ensure a quick recovery and response.

On September 29th, the governor stated that the electric grid for Lee and Charlotte counties would likely need to be completely rebuilt after the storm was dubbed a 500-year flood event. More than 2.5 million reported power outages were reported since power was restored to over 200,000 customers in Southwest Florida.

The Florida Department of Transportation has dispatched 100 engineers working in teams of two to perform bridge inspections while inspectors have cleared 66 priority bridges in the most affected areas. The agency had staged "cut and toss" crews prior to land fall of Hurricane Ian to clear storm debris for first responders. Florida DOT also stated that search and rescue operations were underway as soon as the storm passed and have suspended tolls on roads in Central Florida to help facilitate evacuations.
