Henslee Park Inclusive Playground & Splashpad

Dickson, Tennessee
by Kimley-Horn

Kimley-Horn designed a multigenerational, all-inclusive playground and splash pad at the City of Dickson's Henslee Park, thoughtfully repurposing a former golf course into a vibrant community destination.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Henslee Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

This $3.2 million park addition features a 25,000-square-foot playground with 26 engaging play elements and a 4,000-square-foot splash pad offering 20 interactive water features, creating a dynamic environment that supports recreation, social interaction, and inclusive play for users of all abilities.

Henslee Park was intentionally designed as a destination facility, capable of accommodating up to 1,200 children at one time and encouraging extended visits. Supporting amenities include shaded seating areas, a pavilion, musical play features, and custom playground equipment not found anywhere else in the United States. An accessible restroom and mechanical building anchors the space and is uniquely designed with an upper-level, covered picnic and park viewing area, offering caregivers and visitors comfortable gathering spaces with clear sightlines to play areas.

Innovative design solutions seamlessly integrate the playground and splash pad into a single, immersive experience, allowing users to move freely between water and play elements. The site's natural topography was leveraged to inform building placement, circulation, and viewing vantage points, enhancing both functionality and visual interest. At the time of design, the project represented the largest playground of its kind, setting a new benchmark for inclusive, destination-oriented play spaces and establishing a new tourism generator for the City of Dickson.
