Land of the Free Honoring the Brave by Kimley-HornPhoto Credit: Kimley-Horn
The story of Julian Feild Veterans Memorial Park - named after the town's founder - began long before construction started. In 2014, Kimley-Horn partnered with the city of Mansfield, Texas, to develop a conceptual vision for transforming the existing nine-acre neighborhood park into a destination that would appropriately honor veterans while remaining a place for everyday community use. Long-Term PlanningPhase one of the project was thoughtfully designed to provide spaces for remembrance, reflection, and community gathering, while preserving the natural character of the site. Over the following decade, that vision evolved through collaboration with city leadership and community stakeholders, along with the Mansfield Veterans Memorial and Tribute Foundation. A future phase will utilize the remaining wooded area in the northern part of the park by including trails and a connection to the city's Walnut Creek Linear Trail. This extended planning process has allowed the design team to carefully evaluate how each element contributes to the visitor's experience. Rather than simply placing monuments within an existing park, the goal became creating a sequence of spaces that encourage visitors to slow down, reflect, and experience the memorial in a meaningful way. Every path, plaza, and gathering area was intentionally arranged to create moments of discovery while maintaining strong visual connections throughout the site.Designing for ReflectionOne of the park's defining features is its ability to accommodate both quiet personal reflection and large community gatherings. On any given day, visitors can walk the shaded trails, sit beside the pond, or spend time amongst the black granite memorial pylons honoring each branch of military service. During Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, those same spaces seamlessly transform into gathering areas capable of welcoming hundreds of visitors.
