Gran Cielo Park

Bozeman, Montana
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

Gran Cielo Park is a new, 5-acre neighborhood park located in a diverse housing development in Bozeman, Montana. Envisioned as the iconic gathering place for the surrounding neighborhood, the park stands as an example of thoughtful design and community planning. Billings-based landscape architecture firm Land Design, Inc. played a unique role overseeing the creation of the park from its conceptual beginning through master planning and construction.

The main objective for the park's design was to foster a sense of community among residents while creating a unique identity for the surrounding neighborhood. At the heart of Gran Cielo Park's design is its unique terrain, which is carefully crafted to offer an inviting and visually appealing environment in otherwise flat surroundings. The custom-designed park shelter and pedestrian bridge add a touch of individuality while serving as iconic focal points for the surrounding neighborhood. The water fountain at the park's front entry further enriches the park's aesthetic appeal and visual continuity while allowing residents a chance to relax outdoors.

One of the park's highlights is the introduction of Bozeman's first paved pump track. This feature not only adds an element of excitement but also provides an innovative amenity for the broader community. Social games like ping pong and bean bag toss provide additional variety for young and old alike within the park while creating an opportunity for neighbors to meet up. The park's playground gives a nod to Bozeman's outdoor lifestyle with features like rock climbing boulders, a starter slack line, and skating play equipment. These features stand alongside traditional playground elements like swings, slides, and climbers. Woven into the park's framework of meandering, tree-lined paths are a sledding hill and a multipurpose lawn space.

New homeowners have been drawn to this diverse housing development due to the unique amenities offered by Grand Cielo Park. This has resulted in quick occupancy and high demand within the neighborhood as well as popularity among the residents of the community of Bozeman. Gran Cielo Park isn't just a park; it's a place that brings everyone together and makes the neighborhood a more exciting place to be.
