Thanks to people like South Salem resident, John D. Miller, it is becoming easier to be a sustainable, eco-friendly real estate development.
Miller, of Wildwood, Inc. and Mahonia Vineyards & Nursery, recently unveiled Salem?EUR??,,????'???s first all-green subdivision, Woodscape Green.
?EUR??,,????'??One of the unique things about Woodscape Green is all the homes are qualified for the Earth Advantage and Energy Star programs,?EUR??,,????'?? says planner and developer Miller. ?EUR??,,????'??No one?EUR??,,????'???s ever done that before in one development in Salem.?EUR??,,????'??
Few developments in the Northwest can make that claim, according to Tim Ahaus, marketing director of the nonprofit Earth Advantage organization.
?EUR??,,????'??Portland has one or two, but this is the only one in Salem. It?EUR??,,????'???s unique in that John has made it mandatory?EUR??,,????'?? for all the homes to conform to green standards.
?EUR??,,????'??That?EUR??,,????'???s going above and beyond what most developers will do.?EUR??,,????'??
One of the central designs of Woodscape Green is landscaping with hardy, native plants. ?EUR??,,????'??Native plants are drought resistant and take less maintenance,?EUR??,,????'?? says Miller. ?EUR??,,????'??Homeowners will use less water and spend less on their sewer and water bill. What could be better?
Miller donated land for an adjacent pedestrian pathway, a native plant demonstration area and a natural water treatment site.
Public awareness about green building has been growing exponentially, said Nathan Good, a Southern Salem architect who specializes in green building and sustainable design.
?EUR??,,????'??I think it?EUR??,,????'???s accelerating faster than (the industry) is prepared for,?EUR??,,????'?? says Good.
?EUR??,,????'??There are so many people that I meet in Salem that would love to have a green home, but they don?EUR??,,????'???t because they don?EUR??,,????'???t think there?EUR??,,????'???s anyone building them. I think it?EUR??,,????'???s just a matter of time.?EUR??,,????'??
