By measuring flow rate and recording total flow over a period of time, flow sensors perform a valuable function in a smart irrigation system.

A new testing protocol for flow sensors has been in development since May 2015 by Smart Water Application Technologies, a coalition of irrigation professionals, water suppliers and equipment manufacturers, and is now ready to be reviewed and commented on.

Called the Irrigation Flow Sensing System Test, it is designed to validate manufacturer claims of the capabilities of their flow sensors. According to the Irrigation Association, flow sensors with their ability to measure flow rate and record total flow for a period of time are now more affordable and so more widely used in landscape irrigation systems.

The protocol will be used to only evaluate a sensor's capacity for detecting and measuring flow over a range of flow rates for which the sensor is designed to operate. The stated intent of the protocol is to help irrigation professionals make management decisions.

SWAT protocols are drafted by irrigation experts, then opened for public comments that are reviewed and considered. Changes may be made to the testing protocol, which can be released again for comment – 90 days for major changes and 30 days for minor ones. Most protocols go through several cycles of public review and revision before any third party testing is done.

Version 2.0 was posted at the end of last month and its public comment period will end Dec. 20, 2016. Download and complete the SWAT comment form then email your completed form to swat@irrigation.org.
