Bella Isla Apartments Miami Beach, Florida
This apartment complex is a 5-story condominium project located on the easternmost island of the Venetian Islands chain in Miami Beach. This project has a waterfront view over Biscayne Bay towards South Beach. GSLA designed the amenities, hardscape, planting, irrigation, and landscape lighting for the project. There is intensive green roof planting on both the roof deck and on the 4th floor terrace which sits above a covered parking structure. The terrace is an Everglades-themed amenity deck with a meandering river water feature and a native, everglades plant palette. The ground floor is planted with a coastal plant palette and the amenities here include a stone waterfall/planter at the main entry, a bay walk, a lagoon pool, a lap pool, a spa, cabanas, and lawn space. The predominately native subtropical planting is enhanced with locally sourced oolitic limestone and coral stone hardscape features.

Marlins Park Miami, Florida

The home of the Miami Marlins baseball team, Marlins Park is located within the Little Havana neighborhood in the City of Miami. The project received LEED Gold certification from the USGBC. GSLA designed the hardscape, planting, and irrigation for the stadium and exterior plazas as well as the four adjacent parking garages, six surface parking lots, and the surrounding roadways. The plazas were designed as multi-purpose event spaces to function on game days as well as non-sporting events. The plant material was selected with Miami's "feast-or-famine" rain conditions in mind and all of the surface parking lots were made using permeable paving to reduce stormwater runoff. The irrigation system is controlled by a smart, weather-based controller and uses a combination of drip and spray irrigation to reduce water consumption

Meditation Garden Miami, Florida
South Miami Hospital had a small space with big potential. GSLA took an unused rear courtyard tucked away behind an old hospital bed tower and transformed it into a verdant, tranquil meditative space. Miami-Dade County is currently converting the space below the adjacent Metrorail elevated train track into "The Underline", a 10-mile linear park that connects Dadeland to Brickell. This Meditation Garden is the first project designed and completed to interact with and expand this new linear park. GSLA designed every aspect of the garden from the custom wrought-iron artistically decorative entry gates to the oolitic limestone benches. The firm filled the space with swaying native sabal palms punctuated with orchids and other epiphytes.

As a landscape architecture firm in Miami, we are committed to innovation, sustainability and sound horticultural practices. We specialize in modern, subtropical design that is synonymous with South Florida and the Caribbean. Our completed work covers a broad array of public and private projects including commercial, urban design, streetscapes, school and hospital campuses, parks, condominiums, hospitality, and custom residential projects.

Editor's Note: With the ASLA annual meeting and EXPO in Miami canceled this year due to safety concerns amid the COVID-19 health pandemic, LASN still wanted to highlight the landscape architectural work of firms from the southeast region. LASN asked the firms to send us a short biographical profile, plus photography from selected projects, with a brief description of the design work for each project. We let the firms speak for themselves in their profiles and in describing the projects, although some editing was required because of space restraints and not all photography and projects could be included. Thank you, firms of Florida and Alabama for participating!

As seen in LASN magazine, September 2020.
