For Earth Day 2011, R&S Landscaping wanted to do something both fun and educational,” stated Robert Schucker, president of R&S Landscaping. “We expect these contests will encourage students to learn about Earth Day and understand how issues such as water conservation and planting can affect their day-to-day lives in an entertaining way. We look forward to seeing what the students come up with and hope the contests inspire their creativity in addition to teaching them about being good to the environment.”

To inspire creativity and encourage Bergen County students to be more aware of what they can do to help the environment this Earth Day, Midland Park, N.J.-based R&S Landscaping, the region’s premier environmentally responsible landscaping firm, today announced the start of its first annual “Earth Day … Every Day” video and poster contests.

The poster contest is open to Bergen County grade school students from the first through eighth grades. Students are asked to design a poster no larger then 11 by 17 inches in size, focusing on either water conservation or plants and planting. Artwork must be drawn or painted on a flat surface with pencil, crayon, marker, paint, or pastel.  All posters must be submitted along with a completed entry form to the Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood by closing on April 29 to be eligible for the contest. Entry forms can be obtained at www.rscape.com or at Whole Foods.

The first-place winner of the poster contest will receive a free pizza party for their entire class, and will have their original artwork displayed at Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood for the month of May and posted on R&S Landscaping’s Web site and Facebook page.

The video contest is open to high school 11th and 12th graders, and calls for students to make a video — two minutes or less — that demonstrates what they are doing to make Bergen County a more sustainable place to live. Suggested topics include water conservation, xeriscaping, composting, native plantings, organic gardening and avoiding the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers.

To be eligible for the contest, students must include the following information: name, grade, school, contact information (or link to your Facebook page and title of the video. The first-place winner of the video contest will win a $200 book scholarship to help offset college costs. Due by noon on May 6, the videos can be e-mailed to info@rscape.com or posted to the R&S Landscaping Facebook page.
