In 1974, Larry DeWitt, a degree in horticulture in hand, launched DeWitt Landscaping, which led to the development of an innovative product for the landscaping industry.

After three years in the business, DeWitt was searching for a material to stop weeds and increase plant growth without the use of harmful chemicals. At the time, black plastic was a landscaper's primary option. From hands-on experience, DeWitt knew that while it stopped weeds, it also blocked out moisture and air leading to disease, fungus and rot.

"I saw the effects of the suffocated soil," says DeWitt. "I turned this problem into an opportunity by producing the first-ever permeable landscaped fabric that allowed air and water through."

DeWitt experimented with textiles and materials until discovering that woven polypropylene did everything he wanted. His new landscape fabric, later dubbed DeWitt Weed Barrier• was born.

According to the company, their products are used in more than 70 percent of the commercial landscaping done throughout the United States.

Today, as the Dewitt Company celebrates 40 years in the business with over 600 products offered to landscape professionals, it "believes that the future of the industry is not only bright, but also beaming with opportunities to grow, learn and evolve."
