After legislators passed a law in 2020, the Department of Natural Resources was slated to grow its urban and community forestry program from two to nine members. In addition to the new staff, the department will be aided with a state-funded grant program that will help inventory current trees, maintain them, and plan where to plant new trees.

 

Another beneficial move for urban forestry came in the form of the Inflation Reduction Act, signed by President Biden. The act includes $1.5 billion towards the U.S. Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program. Since the current funding for the program is only $36 million, this new funding should allow the Forestry Program to become a major source of urban forestry assistance for cities across the United States. Beattra Wilson, the overseer of the program said, "These dollars are designed for the most vulnerable, for underserved and under-resourced communities. We anticipate rising to that occasion."
