The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has welcomed House passage of legislation extending federal surface transportation funding through December 11, 2026. The short-term measure is intended to prevent a lapse in federal support for highway, transit, and transportation safety programs.

 
The extension continues Highway Trust Fund support and associated federal transportation programs while Congress works toward a longer-term reauthorization bill. The funding measure provides continuity for state departments of transportation responsible for delivering infrastructure projects and maintaining transportation networks.

AASHTO President Russell R. McMurry, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation, praised lawmakers for advancing the legislation. "AASHTO applauds Congressional leadership for advancing legislation that will continue Highway Trust Fund support for highway, transit, and safety programs," McMurry said.

The association also emphasized that the extension should serve as a temporary bridge rather than a substitute for comprehensive transportation legislation. AASHTO called on Congress to pass a long-term reauthorization bill during 2026, preserving existing program funding levels and providing greater certainty for state transportation agencies.
