The U.S Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently revealed a revised version of the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) that "aims to reduce both traffic fatalities and injuries on U.S. roadways."

"Pathways to Safer Streets" - the initiative headed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - focuses largely on human intervention. While including innovative road design to create safer roads, the strategy briefly mentions intersections and arterial roadway design with no reference to infrastructure that would increase safety for bicyclists on public roadways.

This follows as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced in July that the Trump Administration was redirecting $1.73 billion from Biden-era programs - some of which supported bicycle infrastructure grants - towards roads and bridges. That same week, the League of American Bicyclists reported that the USDOT had "removed bike lanes, road diets, and speed management from their Proven Safety Countermeasures website." The website previously claimed that implementing such infrastructure "can reduce crashes up to 53%." With such high efficacy, the question remains as to why the USDOT has removed this information from their official guidelines and neglected any mention of bicycle infrastructure in their initiative towards increasing safety for everyone using public roads.

LASN will continue to follow the story and provide updates.
